OK, we had our first real strict vegans in the shop twice this past weekend. I wasn't sure--actually hadn't thought about it too much because I just try and respect everyone's beliefs and practices while continuing to do what I do.
I didn't realize vegans don't eat honey because of smoking the bees out of the hive. Now Mary's dad always had beehives and she believes it's not cruel to the bees to take the honey. All it does is stress them to the point that they eat up as much as they can and leave the hive because they think they are in a forest fire. When the smoke clears, they return to the hive. None die and they are not forced to be in the hive in the first place. Evidently you buy a queen for each hive and then the boys just come and stay because she is there. They aren't fed chemicals or pumped full of hormones and they are not forced into any inhumane living conditions.
Am I missing something? Any no-honey-eating vegans out there?
